Settle yourselves down here, Shakespeare fans: Dodwell Park is just two miles from Shakespeare’s birthplace, Anne Hathaway’s cottage and all the bardly attractions of Stratford-upon-Avon. There’s peace, there’s quiet, there’s a countryside setting – and if all that still isn’t enough for a final attempt to get the kids (and dog) reading sonnets, you can culture-ise them by taking them along to nearby Warwick Castle for all sorts of horrible history. Sorted. ‘Leave no trace’ is the motto at Wolford Wood, and once you set eyes on this scenic park among 200 acres of lush paddocks and leafy greenery, you’re sure to have no problem wanting to do your bit to protect the local landscape… This Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to a rare English deciduous woodland and 2,500 different species of flowers, fungi and fauna, is a blissful spot just under a mile from the meeting point of Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. While the setting on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is excellent for explores, staying local and wandering the woodland is also a firm favourite of guests, whether they spend their time making dens with the kids, chatting with friends next to one of the firepits (logs are available at the park) or just getting lost on pretty paths. The site also hosts regular events and activities for kids and grownups (open to day visitors and guests, for an extra charge) so have a chat to see what's on while you're here. During ambles, bring a picnic along made up of bits and bobs from the deli in Moreton-in-Marsh; you can also stoke up the barbecue back on site (as long as it’s off the ground) if you’re craving grilled grub. Burn off the calories later at the gym and pool in the Fire Service College (a five-minute drive). Please note that there’s no parking next to pitches here, but a car park is available. Guests are also asked to take their rubbish home with them where possible (although you can leave sorted bags of rubbish on site for an extra charge) and no single-use plastic is to be brought into the woods. If you’re doing your bit for the environment by travelling on public transport, the site can organise pickups from Moreton-in-Marsh’s train station.
A word from the host: Peaceful countryside site set amid 200 acres of paddocks and woodland
